Officer Lowery came in to talk to our future police officers in kindergarten. Officer Lowery showed off his uniform and tools, demonstrated his lights and sirens in his police car, and answered many questions. Students learned that police officers have to do well in school, graduate from police academy, and pass a test in order to become a police officer. Thank you, Officer Lowery!

Career Day
The Garmon family visited Ashton and Blakley last week to teach them about becoming race car drivers when they grow up. They learned how math, science, and communication play a huge role in racing. The boys got to see a real race kart race, see racing flags and trophies, and ask questions. Thank you, Garmon family, for teaching us about racing!

Persuasive Disney Letters
Last week, we wrote persuasive letters to our favorite Disney characters requesting an autographed picture. We will be watching our mailboxes closely as we wait for responses.
School Dance!
Here we are at Highland's very first school dance. Our Jr. Lego League and Jr. BETA clubs held the dance to raise money for their upcoming national and world competitions.
Comparing Surface Area
The question posed today: "Who has a bigger window -- Emma or Andrew?" This was tough because Emma's was longer but Andrews was taller. Students had access to a variety of measuring tools and had to discover which would be the best for this case. The students figured out that the tiles and cubes were both able to measure the surface area of the windows. (It turns out that Andrew's window was bigger.)
Measuring Surface Area
Joey was trying to measure the surface area of a rectangle with tiles. However, he ran out of tiles! Our class was challenged to figure out how many tiles it would take to measure the surface area. Some students figured out that they could continue the lines in the picture and others realized they could use cubes to measure the area. This took some major problem solving!
Measurement
We are learning all about measurement this week. Here we are discovering why using the same unit of measurement is so important.
Charlotte's Web Mental Images
After reading each chapter of Charlotte's Web, students drew their mental image of that chapter. This really helped us think about what was going on when we didn't have many pictures in the book to look at like usual.
