January 24-30 Newsletter

Mrs. Morgan’s Newsletter
Week of January 24-30

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
*We will be reading the story One Little Mouse together and will focus on the comprehension skill of sequence (the order in which things happen).
*We will focus on: reading and writing words with consonant blends (A consonant blend is when two consonants make a blended sound. For example, the word “frog” has the consonant blend “fr”. The students would sound out the word like this: /fr/ /o/ /g/. More examples of consonant blends include “sled’, “clap”, and “plug”.
*We will be able to read and spell the high-frequency words: zero, one, two, three, four, five (Your child brought home a Ziploc bag with the number words zero-ten. Please add these to your flashcard collection and practice daily. We will be covering the number words six, seven, eight, nine, and ten next week in class.)
*Our Amazing Words this week: woodland, nest, vale, hollow, comfortable, shadows
*Math: This week we will continue our geometry unit. Students should be able to identify 2D shapes (circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, heart, star, trapezoid, parallelogram, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and diamond/rhombus) and 3D shapes (cylinder, cube, cone, pyramid, rectangular prism). Students will also be learning about fractions. They will be able to identify shapes that are whole objects, that show equal parts, that show unequal parts, and that show ½ .
*We will continue learning about economics. Students will be learning about jobs, spending/saving money, making choices, wants and needs, goods and services, scarcity, and opportunity cost.
*Friday Spelling Test: zero, one, two, three, four, five
*Friday Addition Facts Test: doubles through 10 (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9, 10+10)

News & Reminders:
*Don’t forget to continue working on your 100th Day of School projects. The 100th Day of School will be Thursday, January 28. Please have your project in by that day. (If at all possible, bring it in THAT day.) I have reprinted the 100th day of school letter on the back of this newsletter. (It is the exact same letter that was on last week’s newsletter.)
*Please practice tying shoes at home. Thank you!!!

Jan. 4-8 Newsletter

Week of January 4-8


These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
*We will be reading the story Hide, Clyde! together and will focus on the comprehension skill of main idea (what the story is all about).
*We will focus on the letter: Oo (short /o/, as in octopus)
*We will be able to read and spell the high-frequency words: they, you, of
*This week’s Word Family: -in (We will practice reading and writing words in the “-in” word family, such as fin, tin, chin, grin, etc.).
*Math: This week we will learn about measurement. Your child’s “I Can” statements for this math unit are located on the back of this newsletter. We will only be covering measurement this week.
*Science: This week, we will be learning about magnets! We will be learning about different types of magnets and doing several experiments with magnets.
*Friday Spelling Test: they, you, of, and 4 words with short o (could contain: a, b, c, d, f, i, k, m, n, o, p, r, s, t -- like dot, pop, Ron, Tom, etc.) Remember, names must begin with a capital letter!
*We will be practice the /th/, /sh/, /ch/ sounds this week. Practice reading and writing words like shot, chop, thin, Chad, ship, bath, etc.


Now that we are halfway through Kindergarten, we will be making a couple of additions to our weekly routine:


*IMPORTANT: We will begin practicing problem solving and addition problems daily starting this week. Students will have a math homework sheet to complete each week. Each Friday, the sheet will be placed in the “Homework” section of your child’s folder. This homework page should be completed by the following Friday. There will be five problems your child should complete. They can do one problem a day, or they can do them all in one night. I am asking that you return the sheet to the “Homework” section each night, whether it is finished or not. I will take the homework page out of your child’s folder each Friday. ***If the homework is not completed by Friday, your child will miss recess that Friday and they will need to finish the homework over the weekend.


*We will begin timed addition tests each Friday. This week, we will be practicing +0 addition problems (0+4, 2+0, 9+0, etc.). On Friday, if students can correctly answer 20 addition problems in 3 minutes, they pass and will be recognized with their name on a star on the Kindergarten addition facts wall at Highland. This week, the problems will be 0+ any number through 10. **Please note that “Rocket Math” students will continue taking their normal Rocket Math tests as well as these weekly timed tests. The weekly timed tests should be very easy for them.

*Thank you to those that volunteered their time for our Christmas Around the World trip!
*No school on Monday, January 18 due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
