Derby Day

Highland kindergarten celebrated the Kentucky Derby in style on Friday with our very own rendition of the world famous derby race. Each class had their own derby race with stick horses. The winners from each class competed against each other in a final race. The overall winner was Aiden from Miss Nikkia's room. Way to go, Aiden!

Highland HERO: Anne Rhoades

Poppy's Field Trip

Highland Elementary was recently the grand prize winner of WBKO's Poppy's Field Trip. Poppy and the program sponsor, Flora Templeton Stuart, paid us a visit. They brought along free ice cream for everyone and a brand-new laptop for our school. Thank you Poppy and Flora Templeton Stuart!

Happy birthday, Mrs. Gibbons!

We recently celebrated Mrs. Gibbons' birthday with the entire kindergarten throwing one huge surprise party!

Scientist of the Week

Ashton was recently our scientist of the week. He got to choose and practice a simple science experiment at home. Then him and his dad got to demonstrate the experiment in class.

Bucketfilling

These boys were reading their notes in class after classmates had filled their buckets. Bucket filling is where we support our classmates and teachers by writing notes to one another to encourage them and point out their wonderful qualities.

Jump Rope for Heart

Highland Elementary School participated in jump rope for heart in February. The students who raise the most money got to recently put a pie and a teacher's face in a schoolwide assembly. Our own Anne Rhoades got to pie our guidance counselor, Mr. Harper!

The students below described the setting of the story "The Lorax" before the greedy old Once-ler came along.

We Are Word Nerds

We have really been focusing a lot on vocabulary in our classroom. Here is a wonderful example from Miss Hannah.

First Graders Shared Their Personal Narratives

Some graduates of room 148 came down to visit us today to read their personal narratives that they had written in first grade. I am so proud of each and every one of these kiddos!
