Highland's Thanksgiving Meal

Highland had a school-wide Thanksgiving meal the week prior to Thanksgiving. The students' family members were invited. We dined on turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, and dessert. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who attended.

Jayden's Birthday

We celebrated Jayden's birthday with cupcakes and his mom led us in a game of BINGO!

Thanksgiving Feast

We had a special Thanksgiving Feast in our classroom on Tuesday, November 24. Each child dressed as either a pilgrim or a Native American. They also each brought in a can of vegetables for us to cook. Mrs. Morgan made the turkey and Mrs. Vibbert made the dressing. Our parents and grandparents were invited to attend. Nov. 29 - Dec. 5 Newsletter

Mrs. Morgan’s Newsletter
Week of November 29 – December 5

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
* We will be reading the story Little Quack together and will focus on the comprehension skill of plot (the things that happen in the beginning, the middle, and the end of a story).
* We will focus on the letter: Rr & Dd
* We will be able to read and spell the high-frequency words: see, look (These are attached to the newsletter. Please add them to your child’s word ring.)
* Our Amazing Words this week: duckling, pond, paddle, plunged, proud, brave
* We will practice reading and writing words in the –ip Word Family (sip, dip, trip, ship, etc.).
* Math: We will begin our sorting and graphing unit. This week we will learn how to sort by size, shape, and color. The following two weeks will be spent on graphing. Your child’s “I Can” statements are located on the back of this newsletter. Please review these with your child often.
* Social Studies: We will begin our Christmas Around the World unit! Throughout the month of December, we will learn the different holiday traditions celebrated around the world. This week we will learn about Christmas in The Netherlands, France, Germany, and Greece. Just a heads-up, we will learn about a tradition in The Netherlands where children place their shoes in front of the fireplace on Sinterklaas Eve—Dec. 5. If the child has been a good boy or girl, Sinterklaas leaves a small treat, such as candy, in his or her shoes. The students may try this at home, so don’t leave them disappointed! :O) I have a BIG volunteer opportunity for parents/grandparents/etc. right before Winter Break (most likely on Thursday, Dec. 17). Please keep your eyes open for more info on this.
* Friday Spelling Test: see, look, 4 “d” words (could contain: b, m, t, a, s, p, i, c, n, r, d, like “dad”, dip, did, dab, etc.)

News & Reminders:
* Thank you to all the parents who participated in our classroom Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday! And thank you to all of those that sent in veggies and dessert! I will put pictures on our classroom blog as soon as I can.
* School Yearbook Order forms were sent home Monday, November 23. Yearbook sales will continue through Dec. 11. Yearbooks will cost $18. Please return the form with payment by Dec. 11 to place your order.
* Scholastic Book order forms came home today! If you would like to make an order, please send in your order form and payment (checks made out to me) by Friday, December 4. These make good (and inexpensive) Christmas gifts! If you are purchasing books as a Christmas gift for your child and you do not want the books to be sent home with him or her, you can arrange to pick them up here before or after school. Just make a note if you would like for me to hold the books for you here at school.

Have a great week,

Community Field Trip - November 10

After reading Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten, the Kindergarten classes wrote a PTO grant to go on a field trip JUST LIKE Miss Bindergarten's class. The Highland PTO graciously provided the funding for us to go on such a field trip! We started out the day at the Glasgow fire station and then went next door to the police station and 911 dispatch center. After that, we got back on the bus and headed to the post office and then we were off to Beaver Trail park for lunch and playtime. After filling our bellies and getting our energy out, we headed to the library for storytime. Our last stop was a trip to Sweetheart Bakery where we saw a cakAlign Centere being decorated.

We learned a dance during storytime at the library...

Miss Amber reads us Where the Wild Things Are...

Beep, Beep! Kennedy driving the postal truck...

Mrs. Morgan's class with a Glasgow postal truck...

Malachi checks out the mail that will be sent to him tomorrow...

Jordan the postman!

The post office was so big!
Sparky visited with us at the fire station!
Aaliyah practices dialing 9-1-1 and giving the operator information like name, address, and phone number. Many of us, by the way, need to keep practicing address and phone number.
Some of us standing in front of "Granny", a fire truck from 1925!

Koral and Alyssa sit atop "Granny".
Our class piles onto "Granny".

Ja'Marian, Dylan, Jordan, and Josh pose in front of the firefighter suits.
We got to check out the fire trucks, of course!

Firefighter Wyatt teach us all about the fire trucks.
Alexis checks out the cookies that are about to bake!
We got to watch a cake being decorated at Sweetheart Bakery! YUM!

Ericka (snow princess), Modesty (mermaid), and Jay (ninja) are enjoying their snacks.

Kennedy made the perfect Snow White!

Malachi (Cowboys football player) and Mrs. Morgan (Redskins football player) share a hug...even though they are on rival teams.

Snack time with Alyssa, Dylan, Logan, Izaac, Alexis, and Superman....I mean, Donavin.

We got to decorate our pumpkins from Jackson's Orchard!
Izaac shows off his pumpkin.

Super-Donavin

Jordan showing off his artistic ability.

Aaliyah has made a cute little pumpkin face.

Ja'Marian had a HUGE pumpkin! Their only rule at the pumpkin patch was to pick a pumpkin they could carry on their own. Ja'Marian must be very strong!

Modesty takes her time with her pumpkin.

Brandi...the sweetest witch I've ever met.

Audrey is all smiles while working on her pumpkin.

Mrs. Morgan carved a classroom jack-0-lantern. The students got to help get the seeds and other gunk out of the pumpkin. Ericka was a big help! She really dug in!

Here is Jordan being a big helper and getting all the seeds out of the pumpkin.

Jackson's Orchard Field Trip
We went to Jackson's Orchard on Wednesday, October 28. We took a hayride to the pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin, walked to the apple orchard to pick apples, learned how apple cider is made, enjoyed some delicious sugar cookies and apple cider slushies, played on the hay bale playground, and slid down 60-foot slides! We had a GREAT time!
Here we are, all smiles, on the bus ride to the orchard...

We loved the big, bumpy slides! Even Mrs. Vibbert and Mrs. Morgan had a slide race.

Hooray for apple picking!

Koral found a delicious apple!

Snack Time! Jackson's Orchard provided us with sugar cookies and apple cider slushies.

Ericka enjoyed the petting zoo. We got to pet goats, llamas, and ponies.

Jackson's has a playground made out of straw! We got to run and jump all over the hay! Audrey is taking a little break from all the fun...

Alexis poses for a great picture...

At the end of the day, we were very tired from all the fun that we had.
