Reading Buddies

This Friday kicked off our first day of Kindergarten Reading Buddies. Mrs. Morgan's reading class has teamed up with Mrs. Eicher's reading class. We will meet every other Friday morning for about 20 minutes. The students in Mrs. Morgan's reading class buddied up with a member or members from Mrs. Eicher's reading class and they each read a book to the other. The students did a great job listening and helping each other with tough words.
Here, Trinton is doing a great job reading to Blake.

Check out some great pictures from Reading Buddies.

Making Cubes

This week in math, we have been learning all about geometry, including solid shapes. On Thursday, we tried to make cubes using toothpicks and marshmallows. Check out a couple of our kiddos making their cubes.

Here's Malachi. He made his cube without any help from the teacher. And it only took him a couple minutes to figure it out!

Here's Malachi again with his finished product.

(By the way, I love the comments you can hear in the background. Listen closely. Jacob says, "It's hard to make!" and Trinton is behind Malachi cuing him on what to say. Malachi says, "I made it out of toothpicks, marshmallows, and..." Trinton whispers, "And that's it." And Malachi echoes, "And that's it." So cute.)

Here's Mitchell and his cube.

Needs and Wants

This week in Social Studies, we have been learning about different aspects of Economics. After talking specifically about "needs and wants", the students made a chart where they drew and labeled 3 human needs and 3 human wants. Below, you can watch some of our students explain their posters. These students did a super job!

Highland HERO Recognition

Congratulations to January's Highland HERO from each of our four Kindergarten classroom:

Mrs. Morgan's Class: Elliott

(Sorry the video is pretty jumpy.)

Indoor Recess

With all the snow and cold weather that winter has brought to us, we have had to move recess indoors. But that is OK! Our students are getting quite creative with Legos, K-Nex, Lincoln Logs, and Gears. Below, Geraldi, Julie, Jacob, Carmen, and Shelvie pose with their Lincoln Logs building. They were so proud of their creation!

Farmers Rural Electric Program

A representative from Farmers Rural Electric visited Highland last Thursday to teach our students about electricity as well as safety around power lines and electrical devices. In the video below, we learn about the dangers of power lines.

Magnets!

This week we are learning all about magnets. Today we learned about magnetic poles. We learned that "opposites attract" (north-south) and like poles repel (north-north or south-south). Here is Miles leading one of our experiments...

Check back soon for some additional videos from today's science lesson. (This one took a long time to load and I ran out of time to upload the others.)
