Election Activities

This week we read three fiction books about elections: Duck for President, My Teacher for President, and Grace for President. We compared and contrasted the characters in the story using venn diagrams and decided who we thought would be the best president. Each student chose one of the three characters to campaign for. We made campaign posters for our choices. On Friday, students cast their ballots for either duck, Grace, or their teacher. They went behind a curtain to mark their ballots. They made "I Voted" buttons afterwards to wear. It was an exciting election: all three candidates were tied and the final vote was the deciding factor! Their teacher (hooray for me) was the winner!

  • Pioneer Day

Today Highland Elementary celebrated Pioneer Day. We rotated to several different stations to learn all about pioneer life in Kentucky. Or first station was the gym where we learned how to play pioneer games like duck duck goose and frog races. In the art room , we learned about quilts. Mrs. Bunch, our librarian, entertained us with a finger puppet play of 3 Billy Goats Gruff. We had a pioneer-like lunch in the cafeteria that included ham, pinto beans, and cornbread. We also made butter in our classroom during snack time and spread it on crackers. During music we learned about folk music and even how to make a banjo!
