Nov. 29 - Dec. 5 Newsletter

Mrs. Morgan’s Newsletter
Week of November 29 – December 5

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
* We will be reading the story Little Quack together and will focus on the comprehension skill of plot (the things that happen in the beginning, the middle, and the end of a story).
* We will focus on the letter: Rr & Dd
* We will be able to read and spell the high-frequency words: see, look (These are attached to the newsletter. Please add them to your child’s word ring.)
* Our Amazing Words this week: duckling, pond, paddle, plunged, proud, brave
* We will practice reading and writing words in the –ip Word Family (sip, dip, trip, ship, etc.).
* Math: We will begin our sorting and graphing unit. This week we will learn how to sort by size, shape, and color. The following two weeks will be spent on graphing. Your child’s “I Can” statements are located on the back of this newsletter. Please review these with your child often.
* Social Studies: We will begin our Christmas Around the World unit! Throughout the month of December, we will learn the different holiday traditions celebrated around the world. This week we will learn about Christmas in The Netherlands, France, Germany, and Greece. Just a heads-up, we will learn about a tradition in The Netherlands where children place their shoes in front of the fireplace on Sinterklaas Eve—Dec. 5. If the child has been a good boy or girl, Sinterklaas leaves a small treat, such as candy, in his or her shoes. The students may try this at home, so don’t leave them disappointed! :O) I have a BIG volunteer opportunity for parents/grandparents/etc. right before Winter Break (most likely on Thursday, Dec. 17). Please keep your eyes open for more info on this.
* Friday Spelling Test: see, look, 4 “d” words (could contain: b, m, t, a, s, p, i, c, n, r, d, like “dad”, dip, did, dab, etc.)

News & Reminders:
* Thank you to all the parents who participated in our classroom Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday! And thank you to all of those that sent in veggies and dessert! I will put pictures on our classroom blog as soon as I can.
* School Yearbook Order forms were sent home Monday, November 23. Yearbook sales will continue through Dec. 11. Yearbooks will cost $18. Please return the form with payment by Dec. 11 to place your order.
* Scholastic Book order forms came home today! If you would like to make an order, please send in your order form and payment (checks made out to me) by Friday, December 4. These make good (and inexpensive) Christmas gifts! If you are purchasing books as a Christmas gift for your child and you do not want the books to be sent home with him or her, you can arrange to pick them up here before or after school. Just make a note if you would like for me to hold the books for you here at school.

Have a great week,
